There’s not much to wonder nowadays when you type “How big is a lion” on Google. A lion appears, you can port him into your house, see it from all around, and possibly place a panda next to him, while you carry on with your chores. About a year back when I saw it for the first time and showed it to a few friends, I was rather astonished by what appeared in front of me. A live animal! Really? Forget about Augmented Reality, ever wondered how you can talk to your friend sitting in the diagonally opposite part of the world? Or the fact that you can literally fly a few miles above the sky in a metal container while the residents in those areas are peacefully and thankfully unaware that you are hovering over their property?
That’s what happens with technology, what appears to be wonderful and miraculous at first becomes a day to day affair after a few days.
Technology loses its charm in no time, and perhaps to keep up the interest we expect upgrades at a rather brisk pace. The ecosystem needs to be continually engaged, and the timelines are cosmetically shrunk to make the impossible happen.
On the AR front, while Google toggles with LIDAR for understanding the depth of the object, Apple gauges the depths of objects through its multiple cameras, and yet we are where we were, a little unsorted, waiting for updates, expecting our apps to work just fine, all the time and also expecting the technology to retrieve alien life in the space. We are everywhere and so is technology.
Miracles do happen all the time though and most of the time they happen when two unrelated powerful technology tools combine to create that one possible application which takes the world by storm.
Think of Engines and aerodynamics, Messaging apps and VOIP, Telephony and Multimedia, Internet and Ads, Internet and Retail. We are expecting all this and more to happen when the power of AI combines with the power of AR.
AI till now has been considered to be bots who can have normal day-to-day life conversations, win chess against grandmasters, or sentinels who will eventually defeat humanity in the apocalypse. We must note however that infants do none of these things properly, they take baby steps – possibly recognize objects around them and understand patterns, gauge the depths, speeds, sounds, and amalgamate the inputs to create meaningful concepts. AI is in its infancy today, it has just started recognizing things, a little better perhaps than yesterday but far away from what it would eventually achieve.
We at our end, are looking at combining this infancy with visualization, giving AI the teeth to not only perceive, but possibly project – Not on a LED Screen, not in terms of audio or anything but in terms of real life objects, which aren’t miraculous anymore.
